I just found a workaround... for some reason Illustrator doesn't give you the option to group text objects by right clicking and pressing group, but I found that it does allow you to group text by using the Group object hotkey (ctrl/cmd+g). Hope that helps!

This option is no longer available on the context menu. Any other suggestions? I found it to be hit miss. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. Usually when there is a shape involved in addition to the text.
