Having trouble understanding the tools in Illustrator

New Here ,
Sep 15, 2019 Sep 15, 2019

I'm having a hard time understanding the tools. I'm trying to do an assignment for class and I need to give an illustrated definition of a handle along with a short typed definition. Does anyone know how to define a handle?

What kind of handle are you referring to? Do you have a sketch?

I'm referring to something like a curve.

So it's about the Illustrator handles? THe Help files explain them https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/editing-paths.html

This is great. Now, all I need is just a short definition of what a handle is and I'll be finished with my assignment.

Have you read those texts? There are handles all over the images. They are the lines that originate in the anchor points.

Oh! My bad. I'm just new to all of this. I've never used this program before.

But if we give you the definition, you paste it into your homework and then you'll never learn it. That doesn't help you. You'd be better off reading your way through the definition of paths, trying out all the things and then write your own homework.

It's alright. I'm not gonna use or paste it. I was just gonna reword it and make it a short definition, but I'm better than that. I'm done with my homework. I just finished it and turned it in. I just gotta face it like a man. Thanks for the help. 😞

If you are referring to what Illustrator's Help (as of version CS6) calls a direction line, and which is more generically called a curve handle among programs like it:

Google for Cubic Bezier Curve and read about the control points that are between the first and last point of the curve. (The points that are not actually on the plotted curve).
