Hi

First time asking on here and still a novice on Illustrator, and wondering if someone can help?

I have a basic drawing of a tree which I am using for a logo, I also have a photo of an end cut on a tree trunk with all the rings and I want to overlay the tree drawing ontop of the photo then give that "no fill" so you can see the trunk image below. Is it possible to then bring the parts of the photo behind into the illustration and then remove the image behind leaving the bits of the photo in the illustration? So basically the tree illustration attached I would like filled with the parts of the photo that it overlays.

Any help would be great or do I need to do this in another adobe app

You may make sure that the tree is a compound path that is located above the raster image.

Then select both the tree and the image and create a clipping mask.
