Do I need to convert the shape to a path? ... it already looks like a path, but what am I missing here... tia for help with this...

Ken,

It should work whether you have fill and/or stroke or neither.

Have you clicked the path with the (Path) Type Tool?

Create your ellipse, then select your type on a path tool, and click on the ellipse, it will change your shape into a path for you then be able to type on. No extra steps needed! It works regardless of stroke/fill settings. Type on a path.gif
