I want to make a new shape with the pen tool. The first point starts at a corner on another shape.
When I make the first point, Illustrator automatically selects the existing shape. In stead of making a new shape, I'm adding points to the old shape.
But as stated in the title, I want do start drawing a brand new shape, which happens to share a starting point with an existing shape.
How?
Does it perhaps help if you turn on the "Disable Auto/Add Delete" option in the general application preferences?

You could lock the existing shape Command +2 on a MAC

I thought of that @Kurt Gold, but then as you are drawing a shape, you can't correct it as easily. Seems like temporarily locking a shape would be less of a hassle perhaps?

Thanks.
@michelew83603738 , I still want to snap to the existing shape's anchor points. When I lock the shape, it seems snapping is disabled.
@Kurt Gold That seems like the solution I needed.
