How multiple files open, they stagger down instead of straight across?

Okay this may be more of a complaint but if someone has a preference fix that would be great.  I am going to try and attach a pic of what I mean, but when I open multiple files they stagger down instead of going across.  For my job I often open multiple files but when doing so they open down the screen so, depending on how many I do, it ends up halfway down my computer and I have to drag them up to view them.  It didn't used to do this, any suggestions?  Or if not, could this be fixed? Thanks.  On a mac by the way

Preferences > User interface "Open document as tabs"

I don't want tabs though.  they are not separate windows then.  I want separate windows, just not opening like this.  It didn't do this before I upgraded to the latest Illustrator.

Choose an arrangement from the tiling menu to the left of the Help menu.
