How to remove fill from lines when no color is selected?

I am not new to Illustrator and am trying to create a simple S shape with the line tool. The fill color is set to none. The stroke is at 1 pt and the color is black. For some reason I am getting a dark gray fill color. When I select the line, the color indicator shows that the fill is none but that is not the case. Have I accidentally turned on a fill that I don't know about?

Select the line and take a look at the Appearance panel to check for additional fills or strokes.
