How to subtract a word from a word

How to you take a word & subtract it in another word?  I'm wanting the word OAKWOOD, the D, I want to add the word ward but I want the word ward to be transparent. I've spent days on this trying every trick from youtube.  We've done the outline, etc.... HELP!
