I have a problem doing a very simple operation

Yes, I already read postings and documentation. What I want to do is doing a reverse erasing of part of a circle. I draw a box for the part of the circle that I want to erase. I use a clipping mark but the problem is that it keeps what is inside of the mark (box). I want to do the contrary, I want to erase what is inside of the box.

It should be very simple operation but I am stuck. Help!

It that is your intended result, you could also achieve it my clicking on a segment of the circle with the Direct Selection Tool (solid arrow), and pressing the delete key.

Look at the Pathfinder Pallet, or Object > Compound Path > Make

You can also use the Transparency Pallet

The results of the  methods will differ somewhat

Compound Path > Make will give the same result as the Pathfinder Pallet

This is what I get as a result. I just want to remove the quarter of the circle...

If I understand what you are trying to do, you just need to take the next step of selecting the center point, and deleting it.

I start to remember what I did in the past. Now, the box erases part of the circle but I have the contour of the box inside the circle The rest of the box disappears, which is a progress. But how to erase the part of the box contour inside the circle?

I am ambarassed to ask so basic questions and I thank you for your help.
