I want to only edit the selected pen path, not paths below

I have a file with many layers of pen tools drawings. When I have a path selected, I expect only that path to be editable by my pen tool. But instead, Illustrator detects deselected paths below and adds onto those paths. There must be some sort  of setting to turn off here? It's driving me crazy...

Thanks!

You can use isolation mode, or lock the other layers.

Hmmm... I wonder if those are the only options. It  seems there must be a prefernces setting somewhere. Going into  isolation mode or locking all other layers each time seems a bit time consuming, but that I what  I'll have to do for now!

Thanks for your ideas! 😄

Isolation mode is your option.
