So I recently purchased the Lenovo Legion 5 (2020) with the following specs:
- CPU: Ryzen 7 4800H
- Screen: 15.6" 144Hz version (for the almost 100% sRGB coverage, and 75% Adobe RGB)
- RAM: 16 gigs
- Storage: 512 GB SSD
- GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6 GB
The problem I'm having is the aforementioned crash problems. Opening and working in Adobe Illustrator 2020 freezes my laptop, stops, flickers to black screen then back to forth until I restart the computer. If I manage to close the applications running (Illustrator, possibly Chrome, or File Manager) the GPU stops showing signs of life. At first, I thought it was a RAM issue, I know manufacturers are cheaping-out on RAMs these days, one of the reasons I bought the 2020 edition instead of the 2021. But now I'm pretty sure it's the GPU, because when I click on the Nvidia taskbar icon a window pops up warning me that there is no graphics card in my machine. Like WTF. After restarting the laptop it works again, but as soon as I'm starting to work in Illustrator after like 20-30 minutes, it crashes again with the same problem. I've seen a few people having the same issue, with the Illustrator, or with Adobe programs, but none had a viable solution to the problem.
Before anyone asks:
Yes, my BIOS is up to date, as far as I know. Yes, the Nvidia drivers are up to date too. I tried setting the priorities for the programs in Task Manager, nothing. I tried reinstalling them, still nothing. I also tried just running Illustrator in Administrator, nothing. Installed a more up-to-date version of the 2020 one, you guessed it, crashing. I tried tweaking the settings in the Nvidia manager to prioritize the graphics card to no avail. I even tried running the laptop in Hybrid mode off (It's an Nvidia Optimus switch for Lenovo Legion laptops to get more performance, I usually have that on) and Over Drive off (which boosts screen response time, I don't think that has any impact on the programs working) still nothing.
The solution I'm currently trying out is turning GPU options OFF in Illustrator, seeing If that helps anything at all, but I'm already missing the Animated Zoom feature. Also, I don't want to re-install Illustrator 2017, a version that actually worked just fine indefinitely, because all my projects I started for this semester were in the 2020 version. Going back would be a nuisance. Solvable, but a nuisance no the less.
If anyone encountered this same issue, or has a solution for it please let me know, because after the what... 8th crash on a brand new laptop, I'm pretty frustrated and infuriated.
Thanks in advance.
