I am having trouble saving my illustrator file to a pdf.  It will save the initial file, but then if I have an update it will not save over even when it's asks me if I want to save over.  I have uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted presets, did shift + option + command and nothing is working.  Please help!

I could not duplicate the problem. I used Illustrator CS2020 on a Mac with Mojave. What operating system are you using?

I'm having the same issue. My PDF files are not over righting after I make edits. When I save as an ai file it seams fine. I am using Mojave and I'm on CS2020 Illustrator 24.0.2. It just started today. It was fine yesterday.

When I save out as an ai file I can see a temp file when I save as an Illustrator defualt I do not see a temp file. Also when I click on "view the PDF after saving" it shows me the old PDF.

Hi All,

Sorry to hear about your experience. We are able to replicate this issue at our end and our Product team is looking into it.
Till the time it is fixed, you may continue using 24.0.1 or simply use Save function instead of Save As.

I would also request if you can upvote this issue here: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-bugs/suggestions/39418213-overwriting-pd...
This is the best way of communicating with the Engineering and Product Management teams regarding issues and suggestions so they can be implemented in future releases.

Regards,

Ashutosh

Hi John,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. As Ashutosh confirmed that this is a known issue wherein we are unable to overwrite a PDF file. In addition to what Ashutosh mentioned, this issue is only reproducible on macOS. For Windows, PDF overwrite seems to work. Again I would like to assure everyone that a bug has already been logged and our Product team is working on it.

on Mac
From General (Cmd+K) > click on Reset Preferences > Than close the program. Open it again, and boom! Now you can Save as a PDF.
(At least this is how I solved the issue 😁)

I am having this issue two years later! Upgraded to MacOS Monterey not too long ago, and can no longer do a Save As to create a PDF from my multi-artboard Illustrator file. I have painstakingly followed the directions about renaming preferences and cache files. I have reset preferences within Illustrator and still nothing.

I am using Illustrator 24.3, so the problem was supposed to have been fixed. Like others have said, this is so frustrating.

The current version is 26.3.1

Where do you save your files?

Does it help when you turn off "Save in background" in the preferences?

Hello @mdhumpy2,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Are you having trouble saving PDFs from Illustrator? If yes, kindly try enabling full disk access for Illustrator by following the suggestions shared here (https://adobe.ly/3XBEZ3f) and checking if it helps.

If not, kindly share more details, like if this happens when saving to a specific folder or with a particular file, and a screen recording of the problem (https://adobe.ly/3XBF07j) so we can investigate this further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav
