This performance issue often occurs when I open Illustrator v 28.4.1 and Photoshop v 25.6 at the same time, making my PC perform extremely slow and lagging. it's enough to make me feel annoyed while working.
I've tried reinstalling Illustrator and Photoshop, changing the graphics performance for the Illustrator & Photoshop app to "High Performance", updating the latest GPU driver, cleaning temporary files, updating windows to the latest stable 2H22 version. but the result is that the performance issue is still not fixed.
additional information I use hardware: CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, RAM 32GB DDR4, SSD NVMe M.2 500GB, Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti, be quiet 700w PSU, Windows 11 Pro 22H2

Hello @Mochi Senpai,
We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. Would you mind trying to run Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps? Also, try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Anubhav

I am also having severe performance issues. I've been using Illustrator for over 20 years almost daily, and I have never had this many freezes. It's very frsutrating and it takes a lot more time to accomplish anything. Therefore, it's costing me money as well. I have a brand new Surface Studio (not laptop) and I maxed out all options to have a high performing machine. Yet, sometime Illustrator crashes on simple tasks. Almost each time, I submit a report to Adobe, but I wonder if anyone is noticing.

I also use illustrator for many years, but the first time I encountered after the update the whole processing performance becomes extremely poor, seriously affecting the work efficiency, I also use Windows, not sure macOS also have the same problem, at present I can think of the only way is only to return to the previous version like v28.3, I hope that adobe's engineers can quickly repair!

I have downgraded my version and it is much more stable, so that's what I will be using for now too. However, I would love to use some of the new features and hope this is repaired soon!

I'm having exactly the same problems! Can I ask which version you downgraded to? Thank you!

I'm also having severe performance issues while working on latest version of AI.
I'll try to downgrade it cause right now it's impossible to handle normal workflow.

Hi @Old Charles,
Thanks for reaching out. Your system configuration seems quite powerful and should be capable of handling Illustrator smoothly. However, it's possible that some optimization tweaks may improve performance. I suggest trying the following steps:
Optimize system settings for Illustrator by following the guidelines outlined in this HelpX article: https://adobe.ly/4dd3XeB
Check and adjust some OS and app settings as demonstrated in this video: https://adobe.ly/3WmJtdv
These optimizations may help enhance Illustrator's performance on your system. If you continue to experience severe performance issues after applying these optimizations, please consider sharing a screen recording demonstrating the issue. This will provide more insight into the specific problems you're encountering, allowing for more targeted troubleshooting.
Let me know if you need further assistance or have any other questions!
Best,
Anshul Saini

I believe it doesn't depend from optimization issues, I just did a test with a recent document I've been working on.
The document it's literally plain shapes with no effects on them (it's a branding project).
Opened both 28.4.1 and 27.9.3 versions of Illustrator at the same time on two differen screens.
Opened the document 28.4.1 takes 1 minute, 27.9.3 opens within seconds.
Click and drag a group of simple shapes: 28.4.1 lags and crashes while 27.9.3 just moves the shapes as it should be.
There must be some major issues here.
However I checked your link and found some useful tips about GPU optimization. Thanks anyway.

Let's be honest. Illustrator is single core and uses minimal resources. The above pc is just waiting for something to do, but the bottleneck is Illustrator legacy code. Every year that goes by that you dont address it because its "such a big endeavor", the problem gets bigger and even less manageable. Illustrator runs the same on a 10 year old quadcore as it does on an i9 with 16 cores. Illustrator does not use resources. I never see use above the following:
Cpu:25%
Memory:33%
Gpu:10%

I recently began working on the Windows platform and encountered the same issue: Illustrator performs poorly on Windows, even on relatively fast machines. It's quite disappointing. Adobe should prioritize resolving these performance issues on Windows.

Hello @ricardo 4D,
I am sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind confirming if Illustrator behaves this way when working with a particular file/tool/feature? Also, have you tried the suggestions shared above by Anshul to check if they help?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Anubhav

Hi Anubhav,
Thanks for getting back. I'm dealing with packaging artwork, a couple of links, but nothing special. I've been using Illustrator for years on a Mac, and it always ran smoothly. Now I'm facing zoom lag and a non-responsive app when switching between tabs across multiple files. Anyway, it's pretty disappointing. It should be running fast out of the box.
Machine optimization is for slow computers. I'm running Illustrator on a pretty fast computer, so Anshul's tips are irrelevant for me.
Cheers!

Hello @ricardo 4D,
Thanks for confirming. Are the files located on a removable/network drive or a cloud-synced folder like Dropbox/Google Drive/etc.? If yes, try moving them to a local directory and share your observations.
Also, try performing a clean reinstallation of the GPU drivers (Intel / NVIDIA / AMD) and setting the Graphics Preference to High-Performance for Illustrator (https://adobe.ly/3MRmelB) and check if it helps.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Anubhav

Everything is running locally on a very fast SSD. Illustrator is the issue; all other apps are running well except for Illustrator. I've seen a lot of people complaining about this.

Same here! I've been using Illustrator for over 20 years, and the recent version is not working well on my very fast, nice, new Surface Studio desktop. I often am not able to select certain items, and also have frequent issues with unresponsiveness, causing me to have to restart frequently.
I've optimized, reinstalled drivers, had my IT person reinstall driver, etc and saw no improvement.
Although sometimes I choose to just use the older version of Illustrator, there is some functionality missing and opening to an older version often causes the files to lose some editing ability.
It's been very frustrating and the issue has been there for a while now. My last post above was from April 😞

It's definitely an issue with Illustrator. Everything else works fine with the other apps, and this is specifically the Windows version. Honestly, Illustrator has been on the fringe for years; I'm not sure why there isn't more investment in this tool.

Ironically (or not since it happs so frequently) illustrator is frozen right now. You can see I have 2 documents open and will likely end up losing work. It's so frsutrating. 😞 Here's a screencast... https://www.awesomescreenshot.com/video/31749508?key=8e9b382e7f13026fd3d2da5c69fafd58

Hello @ricardo 4D,
Thanks for sharing the screen recording. It seems you are working in Overprint Preview, which is CPU only. Would you mind switching to GPU preview to check if it helps?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
