Illustrator animated zoom "randomly" stops working

I've been having this issue for a while, but my animated zoom seems to randomly stop working. I'll exit Illustrator, open it back up, and it will work again (same document) for a while. I had this issue with an old document I was working on that had a wild amount of layers/textures/you name it, so I assumed that file was simply too complex for my computer and it made sense. This file that I'm working on now though only has 3 shapes, two of which have simple opacity masks on them. I've worked on way more complex files on my computer and not had any issues, so I'm not sure why it's happening now. Any help would be appreciated.

Please tell us about your computer and how you use the animated zoom.

Like: is this perhaps a Mac and you try to zoom by pinch zooming with the gesture on your trackpad? Then your issue might actually be the trackpad and not the animated zoom.

I have a lenovo Yoga 9i, and I press Z and then click and drag left/down to zoom out and up/right to zoom in. When zoom is "broken" it will only let me zoom in, and not out. (when I try to zoom out, it zooms in exponentially)

And you are using a trackpad or a mouse? Can you first try a different device?

Maybe a reboot?

Im having the same issue, and now also with Illustrator 2025.

I just end up using Illustrator 2023 because of this. It's a major part of my work flow, and I've gotten used to doing this over the past 10 years.

Whats happening is Im holding "Z" and zooming in and out. At any point, it can just stop working. Mostly when I zoom in and then out quick. When it stops working, you just get a " Lasso Zoom. "
