It's a little difficult to explain this properly, but whenever I try to move the Illustrator program window to another part of my screen, it instantly moves behind every other program window I have open. Even if I just move it a teeny tiny bit...boom... now it's behind all the programs I have open. It is very annoying and I can't find a solution anywhere. I dropped in "before and after" screenshots if they help at all. You can see the "Pathfinder" toolbar is still in front of the Chrome window so it's definitely a weird glitch. The issue doesn't happen with any other Adobe program either. I have updated to the latest vesion of AI a few times and still no luck. I have a 2021 Macbook Pro. Anyone have a solution? Thank you.
I have had the same issue for weeks. In an attempt to solve it, I asked the internets and it led me here. Very frustrating stuff, as people have stated. I too tried some of the solutions here and nothing stuck. BUT... and I am crossing my fingers here, I switched workspaces to "layout" and so far everything is back in order. Been a couple hours now. Perhaps try this one... if it reverts back to our hated glitch I will report back.

Yes, the same thing is happening to me and it's driving me nuts!!
I'm trying to fly around doing various bits and pieces for a project and I then try to move the Illustrator window and POOF, it's gone to the back. And no matter how you try to move that window, it takes off to the back. So you have to move other things out of the way, deal with Illustrator and then go back to where you left off. I have work to do and chasing this window around is not helping. And it's only Illustrator, Photoshop is fine, all the other apps I'm using are fine as well.

I'm having, perhaps, a similar issue. I have an ultrawide monitor and have Illustrator snapped to the middle portion of the monitor. Every time that I open an illustrator project Illustrator comes un-docked and floats some random place on the screen.
It's still on top, thankfully, but it's really aggravating to have to reposition my window every time I open another illustrator project.

Oh, I found the way. Just click window > workspace > reset (workspace name). And voila it's done, you welcome.

Has this still not been solved? It's very annoying and odd they've not fixed the issue considering the subscription etc

Anubhav,
I updated the Illustrator today, July 24, 2024 to v28.6 - Same issue again! OSX Sonoma 14.5 (23F79) on Intel Macbook Pro 2.9 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i9. This ongoing issue is unacceptable considering its impact on daily workflows and exorbitant monthly subscription fees. All this does is provide more motivation to explore alternate products.

As long as you add any tool to any of the default workspaces, illustrator will go behind all windows once you click on the application bar. All the default workspaces tool bars are not comprehensive, that's why we add our own tool bars. If Adobe refuse to rewrite the code to fix the workspace issue, I suggest just have one single workspace and turn on all the tools will do. There is don't need create things for the sick of creating to introduce new errors to meet your KPI please!!!

Both 28.6 and the Beta version 28.7.65 still have this issue. Not fixed yet.

Just updated to 28.7.1 (not the beta version) and it's still doing it. Not fixed yet. So frustrating. Also frustrating that this thread is marked as 'Solved' when clearly it's not – possibly why Adobe seem to be ignoring the issue.

@Srishti Bali Still an issue for Illustrator and Photoshop. (BTW, your "here" link is broken ;-/)
There have been mulitple, OS, Adobe, and Wacom updates over the past year, I keep hoping for a fix.
It is extremely difficult to work like this in one program let alone two simotaniously. As I mentioned last year in this thread, espeically embarracing when I'm making updates while sharing my screen in a meeting. Clients don't understand why I keep switching to other windows and can't seam to stay within Illustrator or Photohsop. My employer is demanding an explanation on why the subscription cost so much with no solution in site.

The latest version of Illustrator has not fixed the problem for me either.
But I'm wondering; If this is not affecting everybody, then what are the people who are affected doing wrong??
I'm running a 2019 iMac on Ventura 13.4. It's not the most powerful machine and I'm worried that If I upgrade to the latest system software it will slow the machine down further. Could this be an issue?
Am I right in assuming that it's not affecting everybody? I heard 'bugs' mentioned. So do the affected people, including me, have bugs in their machines?
Has anybody got to the bottom of what the issue is? Is it PCs and Macs??
Whatever it is it's friggin annoying!

adrian, this has been happening to (I would guess) all Adobe Illustrator users for quite some time. There are work-arounds that many of us have adopted that makes it so we can continue working in a reasonable fashion. The one I am using is to go to Illustrator > Settings > User Interface - and check the box that says "Auto-Collapse Iconic Panels" - this fixes the problem for me. The issue is that all of your panels (like color swatches, etc) will automatically close every time you start to work in your window. To me, this is less of an issue - so this is how Im dealing with it.

I also tried this for a time but doesn't work for Asset Export which I use a lot, so couldn't work this way. I'm wondering if Adobe are looking at this issue at all, it's been going on since Ventura was launched.

This doesn't seem to fix the problem, so not sure it is a "correct answer"
It seems like it is at best a "workaround".
It seems to sacrifice my ability to use various workspaces.
It will be seen how long using that particular workspace will work.
I had tried changing workspaces previously, and it only fixxed the issue temporarily, then went back to doing the same thing.
I use this program professionally. It is really impeding my workflow.

It has not been fixed and the work arounds do not work for most, I believe this issue is a baseline code issue that will have to be re-wrote fully and be part of a full program update, I am not a full time programmer but i do know Adobe has put time into this... As i have been told. It 100% sucks and we are all loosing time trying to work around the issue to get work out. So for us users, there is also a $$$ hit that should NEVER happen!! As we are the customers and consumers.

Believe me, I am not trying to minimize the frustration even though this workaround works for me. The "workaround" is not my typical way of working (palettes automatically closing! no thanks!) - so even the workaround I shared is a bit tedious - just not as bad as the main issue. I am in the same position of being very frustrated, confused and... well lets face it, Angry that this issue cannot be resolved in all this time. Meanwhile we are getting subpar AI that will create a childish looking flower for me if I want (I dont). Adobe needs to focus on the basics of a functioning program.

Yea I agree 100% and it kills me we pay a pretty nominal fee to use an app that is defective. The begining of this issue started out like Quark as far as support and is a major reason it bankrupted them and killed the use of their program... not sure if you're old enough to remember the Quark thing but, i was so happy they got what was coming to them... they basicly told their customers if they didn't like it they could use another program... well we did...LOL Any way so irritating to be in this now.
