You mentioned that you had already reset preferences but if during your CC 2018 install  "Import previous settings and preferences" was not unchecked in the Advanced Options (see screen shot) that are offered then deleting preferences again in the manner described below may be of help:

INSTALL AI.png

You will have to manually make sure that all previous preference files for Illustrator are deleted (or renamed) making sure that Illustrator is closed when you do so. You can then open CC 2018, save a test file and then quit it so that a new CC 2018 only preference folder will be created. (This is all based on a test I did that showed that when an older preference file exists CC 2018 did not create a complete preference folder). At this point I would restart the computer and once rebooted launch Illustrator and hopefully your problem will be solved.

To manually delete preferences:

On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. (On Windows 10 you may be able to go right to this path without unhiding it). Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create  new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

After you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, it is a really good idea to create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

I had the exact same problem as the first post, and I followed your instructions to the letter, but its still crashing. I know that i succeeded in making illustrator forget it previous settings, because it made a new folder beside the renamed one. (...Adobe Illustrator 22 Settings\en_US)

Please get in touch with us at sharewithai@adobe.com  or any of the other support channels - https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html .

Since this is not a generic issue that we can reproduce at our end, we will need someone to look into your machine to figure out what is going on here.

CustomBrush.png

Brush tool is really my problem as I use it a lot, I found some temporary fix that I used to create some custom brushes from last version, and if I open that file as custom library and click on those brush preset BEFORE clicking brush tool, the tool work fine, but not for default brush or newly created brush and it will crash immediately if I change to default brush preset, no clue for shape tool.

Still don't know what happen and wait for bug fix.

Mine was doing the exact same thing and I ended up going back to AI 2017 where I could actually get some work done.

Hi. I've had the same problem. Illustrator was crashing every time I clicked brush tool or pen tool. The problem occured only on my laptop.

It seems that issue was caused by my poor graphic card (NVidia Geforce 610M). I set preferred grapics processor for Illustrator to  "Intergrated graphics" and problem disappeared.

Here is where you find this setting (right click on desktop [Windows 10], then NVIDIA Control Panel):

[Some names may be incorrect, and screenshot is from internet, because my settings are in Polish language and you would probably find it a bit confusing ]

Hope it helps.
