Illustrator CC Crashes when opening 2010 AuoCAD drawing

Hi!

I am trying to open an AutoCAD drawing file with Illustator, and my Illustrator keeps crashing. Others that I know following this workflow save down their AutoCAD file to the version "AutoCAD 2010/LT2010 Drawing", and then open this file wiith illustrator succesfully.

When I attempt to open the 2010 .dwg file in illustrator, I get to the point where I can specify "DXF/DWG Options" (i.e. setting Artwork Scale , selecting which AutoCAD layout to open, etc.)... but then I click OK after setting the DXF/DWG Options and illustrator quits.

I've noticed that this doesn't happen consistenently - sometimes I am able to open in Illustratror... and other times not, and it's not clear to me what's different about files or save versions that seem to determine whether or not this process excutes succesfully.

You are not opening the file. You are importing it. Illustrator needs to convert file structure and in a complex file that might take a while or be impossible.

I see - the CAD file I am loading does have XREF files. Perhaps this adds complexity that is too much for Illustrator to handle (perhaps limited by my graphics card capability?)
