How do I set up a custom document profile in Illustrator CC and save it for future use?

I do not see any way to save it.

Hi there,

I am looking to create a "New Document Profile" which will display a ruler by default. Since I have to switch it on manually every time.

In another forum (which just got closed, before I was able to post my question) it was suggested that this default file is to be found in the following folder:

C:\Users\[MyName]\AppData\Roaming\֔Adobe

On the illustrator help page (which is awfully outdated btw) you get a different suggestion which is:

Documents and Settings\(User)\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings.

I have been trying to figure out for weeks how to set my ruler to always be on, but none of the forum answers was of any help. Since all the folders which supposedly contain the file in question point into nirvana on my machine. 

It's also been suggested, that setting up a new default page in Ilustrator is such an easy task, all we need to do is go into the folder bla bla bla. To this day I haven't been able to find the folder nor the file in question.

I still have to turn on my ruler manually EVERYTIME I start Illustrator.

Can someone please enlighten me and tell me where on earth I can finally find the "New Document Profile" on a Windows 10 machine using Illustrator CC 2019? I would appreciate some help here.

PS: Please do not quote Adobe's outdated CC2013 help post on this matter. Its 6 years old and hasn't helped me at all. The folders in questions are simple not correct. It seems that people who offer help on this matter seem to forget that clients are using various machines, different versions of Illustrator and the folder paths are simple different. I am assuming that it was a mistake on the part of the Illustrator Dev Team to place such an important file in such an obscure place on the hard drive. It also seems awkward, that we must search this file manually in a file browser and cannot open the file through the application itself. I can't remember any other app that requires this. But I may be wrong.

Never mind, in my latest attempt I think I finally found the folder:

C:\Users\[MyName]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 23 Settings\en_US\x64\New Document Profiles

...reminds of a time I asked for direction to a city street once: Sure, its easy to find, just go straight, then left, then right. Cross the river, turn back, go forward, turn around, look to your left, turn right and if you're not lost or the street wasn't moved, you might actually arrive. I think I can finally create a page profile that will have my ruler turned on by default. What a ride (;

This PC > Windows (C) > Users > [User name] > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Adobe Illustrator 23 settings > [locale] > x64 > New document profiles

That you can't open this through the application is caused by the system which effectively hides and protects your user folder from you.

BTW, what will happen if I create a new document profile in the folder and then install an update which then - presumably -  creates a folder "Adobe Illustrator 24 settings". Will my profile page be automatically transferred to the new location, or will I have to do it manually?

When installing the new version you will be asked if you want to transfer your old prefs or delete the old version together with the old prefs.

Unfortunately these settings are easy to be overlooked when updating.

Unfortunately it also might happen that it is even recommended that you delete the old prefs because of incompatiblities.

So what I would do is save the important settings (e.g. via Edit > My settings > export)

It might even make sense to do this regularly, because preferences might get corrupted.

And then whatever happens when updating you have a backup (it's a single file, but you can add the extension .zip to its name and then unpack)

Ok thanks, I will keep it in mind. I created a desktop link to my folder, so that for any future changes I will reach the folder quickly, as it is a bit hidden. I'm pretty sure in a week or so, I will have forgotten the path again for sure. I am currently setting up my Illustrator print template which is fun... Finally (;
