Illustrator - CMYK Color Mode override not working

New Here ,
Jul 05, 2019 Jul 05, 2019

Was not able to find a solution to my problem and I'm struggle to explain it but ill give it try.

I use to be able to link rgb images to a cmyk illustrator file and when I printed it, it would automatically override the linked images and force them cmyk. Now it appears those rgb images do not convert when printed. Now I have to convert all the images to cmyk (which is technically what I should be doing but) I'm curious why this change all of a sudden, not sure what the setting is. Thanks.

Latest version of Illustrator CC

Latest version ... is never a good version number, because it does not prove that you are really on the latest version and that information will be obsolete in a few month. In addition you did not state your operating system and version.

How do you print? What is your printer?

Printer is a canon Imagepress c810, but the issue was happening when the files were shared to others as well, not just my printer.

How do you know that the images are not converted? Do they print?

The images will print, but they are very dull and washed out.

And what do you expect them to look like?

IMG_3425.jpgrgb on the left, cmyk on the right. Previously everything use to print out like the right image, regardless the source link being rgb or cmyk.

So what's different now?

Is it a different printer?

Different Illustrator version?

Different color settings?

Different whatever?

What did you change?

What do you know about color management?

To the best of my knowledge nothing in my workflow changed and I didn't consciously make any changes.

If Illustrator does not preview them washed out, I would check the print settings and especially the color management part.

So can you check if color management is still set up correctly?

Does the image have the correct color profile?

And is the printer set up correctly?

Check your printer's driver version.  Maybe it needs to be updated?  Also, what settings do you use in the print dialogues?  What paper did you use before?  Is it the same as now?
