Illustrator crash when attempting to use 3D effect

I'm running Windows 7 on this machine. On my Mac running 2015.3 at home, the 3D effects seem completely normal, likewise on a colleague's computer I just checked. But on my work machine, running 19.2.1, I would get out of memory warnings when previewing extrude and bevel on any simple objects (a filled rectangle, for example). 3D effects would generally fail to render afterwards. I didn't use them much though, so I lived with it.

Today I updated to CC 2017 and the problem seems worse. The steps:

1. Open a new, blank document.

2. Create an object (rectangle, any fill, no stroke, though any object seems to have the same effect).

3. 3D Effects > Extrude & Bevel. Check 'Preview'

4. Try to change the orientation of the object in the 3D window.

5. Illustrator stops responding. Windows event log:

I just tried a colleague's machine running 2015.3 and had no problems, so I'm a little lost as to what this could be. Anyone experienced anything similar?

Oops, a simple restart appears to have fixed it, hopefully. sorry, thought my IT guy had done one.

whoops, logged in on my work account. Anyway I should note that I've tried resetting prefs so far. I can't do much else without at IT person unfortunately, and he keeps vanishing...
