Illustrator Crashes When Copying - Illustrator 29.6.1 / Win 11

Community Beginner ,
Jul 31, 2025 Jul 31, 2025

I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.

Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.

Hello @Nadia37972677f0tk,

We have received reports from several customers that the latest Windows Defender security intelligence update - 1.435.148.0 has potentially fixed this issue.
Could you try installing the update and letting us know if it helps?

We started this problem on a few PCs in our department on friday. Today, the problem has gone away on some computers and appeared on others. In some cases, a restart has fixed the issue. We have not tried safe mode or disabling defender, because we cannot do that.

Illustrator keeps crashing when I copy or cut any object in Windows 10. This was not happening till a couple of day ago. I tried updating the software - reinstalling it. Nothing works. Please help me with a solution.

@Balaje27342285inhp If it worked a day ago, what was done in the meantime? A plugin installed? Third Party fonts installed? Try temporarily disabling them or removing them to see if the problem goes away. By any chance did you do Adobe Illustrator update? Or, if you haven't, maybe you can try an Illustrator update? Or make sure your OS is fully updated, or if the problem started right after an update, you may need to look into uninstalling it temporarily? Essentially, it sounds so odd that it worked one day and then it didn't while copying any object!

If the above didn't work, or you could try this; sometimes a small corruption in the preference file can cause these kinds of strange issue. Adobe recommends the keyboard shortcut method as it physically deletes the preference file on your system. This is crucial when the file itself has become corrupted. The file is then recreated with a fresh, default state on the next launch. Close Illustrator and Re-launch Illustrator while using the Keyboard shortcut - by holding the Ctrl Alt Shift on Windows. A dialog box will appear asking if you want to delete your preferences. Click Yes.

This will restore Illustrator to its factory default settings. While you'll have to re-customize your workspace and settings, it often fixes these weird crash that you just experienced

I did not update the illustrator, or install any plug-ins. I opened it today and it just crashes everytime I copy or cut. I tried updating the software today and the same crash occurs.

I will try deleting preferences but I dont think the files are corrupted becase it happens even when I opened a new template - blank file - and created a text box and tried copying .

I have tried everything you suggested and mine still does not work.  They only thing I have not tried that was suggested on these threads was disabling Windows Defender and as I'm on a company computer I can't do this.  We need help so we can work efficiently.

Our team of designers are having the same problem as well. Tried downgrading, resetting preferences, reinstalling the whole CC, changing shortcuts. None worked. Updated to the latest version. We cannot disable Defender and other security systems since this is a company device. We did not install anything new and obviously this is not an isolated case given the amount of replies in this thread. Please resolve ASAP we cannot work properly.

12.57pm Monday 11th August - my entire team are now affected by this issue, whereas last Monday, it was just me. I have luckily been given a loan laptop and installed CC and the latest version of Adobe Illustrator and weirdly it's all working fine. My loan laptop is asking me to install some updates, which I haven't done yet.... i am a bit worried this might jinx it. Will report back. My existing laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad running Windows 11, my loan laptop is exactly the same, maybe an earlier version of laptop?!... although there may be some differences somewhere that i'm not aware of. If someone who knows more about these things can tell me what to look for on each, maybe someone can compare the two?!

All week I've dodged this issue whilst team members have been affected. This morning I log in and start work on the exact file that was functioning yesterday and it crashed when I pressed Ctrl C.  It now crashes when I use any form of 'copy'. First instance it gave me an error report to fill in then every time since it just hangs for a second then turns off.

I haven't installed any updates on my PC or within Adobe CC I've not added any plugins or adjusted any settings at all. One day it worked fine now its totally unusable.

Admin really need to provide some sort of update or indication of the scale of this issue as peoples work is being severely compromised. All we have had is requests for people to turn off security settings which obviously isn't an option for a lot of people who have their IT managed by their company. That was days ago! come on Admin give people some info!

I'm using a Lenovo ThinkPad, Windows 11 Enterprise and the latest update of Adobe Ai

Hi.
Sadly, I am having the exact same issue. Since I had 3 versions of illustrator installed (2024, 2023 and 2025) I was able to check for each of them. The same thing happens every time, no matter the version. I am sadly not able to disable Windows Defender as it is my company's laptop. I am also not able to access safe mode. How else can I address this issue? I am fully unable to continue my work.

I don't mean to sound like a Karen but my dear Adobe, can you please provide a statement on this for my company, explaining the issue and stating when we can expect a solution? Adobe Illustrator is a crucial part of my work, I am obliged to perform my work and meet deadlines. Not being able to fulfill my responsibilities in a timely manner affects both me and my employeer.

If this is a Windows only issue it should be more obvious that the issues lies with the clipboard or something, not something idiotic like disabling defender or whatever.

Same issues with us. We can drag and drop from Illustrator to another programme, but not copy at all inside or outside of illustrator without it crashing.

I'm having the same issue, hope this gets resolved ASAP. This is a very crucial but also very basic function of a quite high-priced product.

Saving as different file types, saving in cloud, reinstalling, discarding personal settings etc. did not help. I'd laugh about it if it didn't affect my professional work as much.

Hi @suzi_5489,

Thanks for sharing the details. When you say you are on the latest version, could you confirm if you mean Illustrator 29.7.1? Also, please confirm your operating system and version. Is this issue happening with a particular file or with all files? When the application closes, do you see the Adobe crash reporter dialog box? If yes, please submit the crash report and share the email address you used while submitting, so I can check the logs. Reference: https://adobe.ly/3H8CxLP

Please check if your issue is similar to the one here: https://adobe.ly/46RxWYK. Looking forward to your confirmation on this.
In the meantime, please try the troubleshooting steps here: https://adobe.ly/45ajCta. If that doesn't help, test the issue in Safe Mode and in a new admin local user account as described in the links below.

Windows Safe Mode: https://adobe.ly/47qbE0l
macOS Safe Mode: https://adobe.ly/479ng8b
New user on Mac: https://adobe.ly/45p1z1a
New user on Windows: https://adobe.ly/47oYBfH

Let me know how it goes.

Abhishek

Hello everyone,

Our team is still investigating this problem as a priority, and we will share more updates on its progress.
In the meantime, could you share the following information:

  1. Does Illustrator behave this way when working with new files as well?
  2. Is this problem replicable when saving the file as a Cloud Document?
  3. As a temporary workaround, try using Alt-Drag while keeping the documents open in tiled/windowed mode, and let us know if it works.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Anubhav
