I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.
Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.
Hello @Nadia37972677f0tk,
We have received reports from several customers that the latest Windows Defender security intelligence update - 1.435.148.0 has potentially fixed this issue.
Could you try installing the update and letting us know if it helps?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have managed to get around the issue by saving a file which was previously crashing - created on an older version of Illustrator (within the last 2 months) - as an EPS.
Close Illustrator. Then open illustrator and the EPS file. I can now copy and paste without any crashes.
I have yet to test properly if then saving as an AI file again brings the issue back.

This is working for me - if I save my old illustrator file as an EPS file, I can open it and copy and paste without crashes. However, if I then resave that file as an .ai file and try and open it again, it goes back to crashing.

Hi Scott, this also worked for me but only the first time I tried to copy something - the second time within the same document it crashed! Nearly there!.... an actual solution would be much better 😄

I'm using Adobe Illustrator version 29.7.1. When working on a new file, copy and cut functions work fine. However, when I open older project files, Illustrator crashes, and also when I try to copy or drag vector artwork from those old files into a new one the issue happening.

Who else is trying to use work arounds, then forgets and hits the copy/cut only to be reminded by that frozen white arrow? I'm laughing now, but will be crying soon. C'mon team Adobe! You've got this!

Hi everyone,
Thanks again for your continued patience and for sharing detailed reports around the crash issue when copying in Illustrator 29.6.1 and 29.7 on Windows 11.
I’ve connected with the product team, and they’ve asked if affected users could try temporarily disabling Microsoft Defender and then test the copy workflow again in Illustrator.
Your help in testing this will greatly assist the investigation. Please remember to re-enable Defender once you've tested.
Let us know if disabling Defender makes any difference or if the issue persists. We’re actively working toward a resolution.
Thanks,
Abhishek Rao

Hello, I am already running it without Windows Defender. The company I work for uses network security measures and crowd-strike for protection, so I don't know if that info is of any use but yeah, no windows defender here anyway.

Concerned that the investigations only seem to be looking into versions 29.x when many have stated thatthe Copy Crash issue is affecting older versions too.
I am one of two in our studio of 20 that are a week into having this problem .. we all use version 28.4.1

I am the same, it just started happening today. I have tried reverting to earlier version, I am not running defender, and it is the same from simple image (a path) and have nothing on my clipboard. This is a major blocker!!!! I have reported on all the multiple instances of the program crashing from varying where I copy from, and how I select the copy.

Just adding my notes here. I have multiple team members having this issue on Lenovo Win11 devices. We have tried, uninstalling/reinstalling, event viewer shows us the logs of the event. I am happy to forward those over to support if you need. It points to a faulty module, or rather Illustrator is causing the module to crash: ole32.dll
Faulting application name: Illustrator.exe, version: 29.7.1.8, time stamp: 0x688ca977
Faulting module name: ole32.dll, version: 10.0.22621.5415
I reregistered the module, no change, updated GPU drivers, no change, BIOS updates, no change.
SFC /Scannow + dism.exe multiple times found a few issues, resolved, restarted, repeated to ensure all integritited. Ran chckdisk/ram test, all clear and the issue persists.
Safemode on our laptops has failed.
Please tell us there is an engineering team looking into this, at this point Illustrator is a broken product we are all paying for.
