Illustrator Crashes When Copying - Illustrator 29.6.1 / Win 11

Community Beginner ,
Jul 31, 2025 Jul 31, 2025

I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.

Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.

Hello @Nadia37972677f0tk,

We have received reports from several customers that the latest Windows Defender security intelligence update - 1.435.148.0 has potentially fixed this issue.
Could you try installing the update and letting us know if it helps?

This did not work for me -- appreciate the troubleshooting though!

Didn't work. My CLIPBOARD settings was shut off already. Turned it on and tried.....crashed!

This seems to be working for me! Only if I'm in a cloud file, though. Toggled Clipboard on and off, opened a cloud file, copied pasted with no problem. Saved file and repeated copy/paste with no issue. But I'm also seeing suggestions for saving as an EPS file, so keeping that in my back pocket as well. Fingers crossed and hopes these workarounds hold until Adobe fixes Illustrator.

Sorry all. It was working for me, but now it is crashing again. Maybe something related to the clipboard history though? Adobe is saying to rollback to a previous Windows update. Try contacting your IT department and see if they can help with that and test it out.

I´m experiencing problems with version 29.7.1 when trying to use the copy and paste function. Whenever I attempt to perform this action, the program freezes and shuts down unexpectedly. Could you please help me find a solution for this issue?

Dear All,

Adobe Illustrator crashes every time I copy, this problem started yesterday. This problem happens in all the computers that have installed Illustrator. I had tried to reset preferences, unselect the GPU, reinstall the Illustrator, update to the latest version 29.71, and turn off Windows Defender, but still the same problem.

Any idea that can help me solve the problem?

Many thanks.

Hello everyone,

Our team has identified a potential problem with the latest Windows security updates. Could you try uninstalling or rolling back those updates (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-uninstall-a-windows-update-c77b8f9b-e4dc-4e9f-a80...) to see if they help?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Most of us if not all of us can't do that. I am using a work issued computer and our IT controls the updates. If I was to ask them, they would tell me NO and say it is a company mandate to run the latest.

Same. We need a better solution through Adobe - this is severely impacting our work as an entire team.

Same here. Can't just uninstall company-mandated software and can't decide to roll back updates. Those often require admin authorization from IT.

Cannot do that on a corporate device. That's all managed by IT

Most enterprise edition users are affected by this issue. There’s no point in suggesting downgrading Windows or turning off Windows Defender, it’s caused by corporate security patches. So, Adobe team, what’s the plan? We’re paying you to use your software, yet it feels like you’re not speaking up for us.

Our internal IT team uninstalled everything Adobe on my PC (Creative Cloud, everything) and reinstalled Illustrator 29.5 from our internal software center (not from the cloud). It did not help. Still crashing when cutting or copying. The only thing that HAS worked is to save the file as an .eps. Close AI. Then reopen the .eps. THAT IS WORKING (so far...stay tuned)! File is huge but at least I can get past deadline.

Same here as others. I cannot rollback OS updates on a work PC. This bug needs a solution and patch ASAP. It is severly affecting productivity and progress on critical projects.

I was able to uninstall the last update and it made no difference to illustrator crashing.

Illustrator crashes with all file types (new, saved, .eps, .ai, .aic), all save locations (on my device and on the cloud).

Web-based beta of illustrator DOES let me copy/paste, but doesnt support even basic vector graphics, and I have to upload any font I'm using in the document that isn't an adobe font. Not a great work-around.

I have been using alt+drag, or the libraries features to copy items, but ctrl+c is an integral part of my workflow, so I inadvertantly quit during my work because of this bug.

We really, really, REALLY, need a solution, and quickly.

We tried rolling back our update that was pushed on August 7, (the bug started happening on August 8th) and now instead of freeze and crash, we get to ability to submit a report. Ctrl+C still does not work.

As a corporation, this is very much a YOU problem, not us.

YOU are the ones that need to be working with Microsoft to find a solution. As things stand, this bug is affecting older version of illustrator as well. Find out what they did and contact them for a solution, or at the very least, push an update for the current version of illustrator that bypasses the issue caused by MS.

It feels like every single time I come to these forums for some kinda bug, you guys are doing everything in your power to NOT help your customers.

Do your dang job and get this fixed. Its been over a week since this issue started.

We have uninstalled the latest Windows Security patch from July and are still experiencing the issue.  This does not appear to be related to a security patch from what we can see and sadly these generic blame Microsoft are not helping and just leaving devices vulnerable.
