My Illustrator (28.2) crashing when I switch language from English to other language by input language hotkey I used 'Left Alt + Shift + 2' to change the language to Thai and the app crashed after I pressed these shortcut (But when I pressed 'Left Alt + Shift + 1' to change the language to English, the app was fine)

The app was totally fine when I type the text somewhere else (like notepad) then copy and paste the text

or even I switch the language by using taskbar, the app still working

My Operating system is Windows 10

I didn't receive the error messages or crash reports since the app was not reponding and frozen out

Actually, my After Effects got the same problem for a month but seems like no one could help me

Thanks in advanced for any help.

Was anyone able to fix the bug with updating to Windows 11?

Adobe was still unable to fix this bug, or has it been fixed in one of the latest versions? If yes, please let me know in which version.

Hello @Umber Funk,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Could you share more details, like the exact version of the OS/Illustrator installed, and a small screen recording demonstrating how the shortcut keys work on other apps compared to Illustrator, so I can check it with the team?

Also, try running  Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello everyone,

We appreciate you sharing your experiences here. The product team is looking into this issue and has asked you to verify if any third-party software is operating alongside Illustrator when the crash happens, as this could be relevant to the problem. For reference, here are the instructions to test in safe mode:

Windows: https://adobe.ly/48jFrI9

macOS: https://adobe.ly/4r71kls

Moreover, it would be extremely helpful if you could share a short screen recording that shows the exact steps leading to the freeze, along with the version of Illustrator and information about your operating system. This data will assist us in comparing conditions and monitoring the behavior more effectively.

Please provide your observations, so we can update the team and move forward with this issue.

Same effect. Instant freeze when trying to switch to Russian using ctrl+shift+x. No problem if switching to Chinese. I even swapped the numbers, assuming that the problem was somehow related to the magic number 2, but the problem seems to be in the key combination (ctrl+shift) and Russian layout. If the Russian layuout is already on, switching to another language working fiine, but if you try to switch back...

Hello @roberta56420878,

Could you try using the Windows + Space keys to switch your input language to see if it helps?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have already indicated in my first message that Win+Space or switching the layout with the mouse button does not cause freezes. In addition, the topiccaster in his original message writes that he has the shortcuts Alt+Shift with same problem as mine Ctrl+Shift. Now, I added the Serbian layout to the Russian keyboard. Switching to the Serbian layout with the keys ctrl+shift+4 drop illustrator dead also.

Hi @roberta56420878,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're experiencing.

Could you please confirm the version of Illustrator you're using and share the details of your operating system (OS)? Also, is this issue occurring with a particular file or across all files?

Additionally, were you able to submit the crash report through the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog box when Illustrator crashed? I checked our logs but couldn't locate any report linked to your community email address. If not already done, please submit one the next time the crash happens, and kindly send me the email address you used via DM here on the community so I can track the report and have the logs investigated.

Lastly, if possible, please share a short screen recording demonstrating the crash. This will help us better understand the issue and provide more targeted support.

Looking forward to your response.

Illustrator 29.5.1 according About plate. Windows 10x64 with latest updates. I reproduced the error conditions. Illustrator freezes dead when trying to switch the layout language to Russian using Ctrl+Shift+[any key]. Illustrator does not freeze when switching to other languages (Chinese or English) using the same key combination and does not freeze when switching the layout using Alt+Shift or Win+Space (to any language, including Russian).

Hello, any updates on this bug? I use an auto-switching app to switch languages while working in Abobe Ilustrator. It works fine in Illustrator 2022 and 2023, but freezes Illustrator 2024 and 2025. I've been using the auto-switching app for many years, and haven't had any problems like now in Illustrator.

It's sad to see no updates on a more than a year old bug report. I guess many users across the world use other languages along with English.

Hello @justaskingforafriend,

I tried replicating this behavior on my end, but could not. If Illustrator behaves this way with all files, would you mind confirming the exact version of the OS/Illustrator currently installed and sharing a small screen recording of the problem so I can better assist you?

Also, the suggestions shared in this help article (https://adobe.ly/4k6SEry) and check if it helps?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Anubhav, thank you for your reply. How can I share my screen recording with you? How I can send it to you?

Regarding the help article, some things are done, some thing I can't do due to concern that messing with Illustrator 2025 installation can affect Ilustrator 2022 which I try to avoid due to my current work projects pipeline.

Hello, Nihao! I am a Chinese user, also found that AI and AE crashes when i use Windows language switch shortcut. For me itt's not a problem that happens all the time. It just cropped up tonight. But just after I  opened Premiere Pro to test if all Adobe apps have this problem, it just truned back to normal. Try opening other Adobe products to see if it could renew your global shortcut key settings.

Same here. Windows 10 and Illustrator 28.5 64bit crash on switching languages via shortcut keys. It doesn't happen in app without opened or created documents. Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Illustrator

2. New Document

3. Switsh language with shortcut key (alt+left shift+1, alt+left shift+2...). Illustrator not responding anymore.

This bug is existant for a while but I can not say when it was introduced (I think i registered it in 2023 first time).

Since it very easy to reproduce there is no need to ask users for video. Of other applications, InDesign and Photoshop, at least, aren't affected with this bug.

Hello @Nikola.K,

Hey there, we understand how frustrating it can be to encounter crashes in the middle of work. I tried replicating this behavior on my end by opening a new file in Illustrator and then switching between languages (Windows + Space) in the text box, but I was unable to do so.

Would you mind trying the suggestions shared in this help article (https://adobe.ly/4f7eVTV) and checking if they help? Also, kindly submit the crash report using your Adobe email address and share it here for quick tracking. Steps are shared here: (https://adobe.ly/4fczTAy). Thanks,
Anubhav

I have the same issue.

Illustrator is practically unusabel due to this. I NEED to change the language, but Illustrator instantly freezes.

I need a refund!

And if you quit Illustrator, change language and start Illustrator, does that work?

I am on a Mac, which does not have that  shortcut switch option.

No Macs here, in my area everybody uses Windows...

Starting with a language already set works slightly different...

Windows is configured to switch the language separately for every application. Therefore, starting AI defaults to English (but this can be anything else). Therefore, changing the language has to be done while AI is already running.

Another important thing is that the language has to be switched while AI is open, because different texts has to be typed in several different languages - an obvious case of using multiple language inputs.

Currently there is one single way to use Illustrator: write the texts in another software, eg. Notepad, then copy/paste every single piece of text to in its place... Quite archaic and very time consuming.

Accidentally switching the language means UNRESPONSIVE FREEZE (End task), the only way to recover the work is frequent saves or the automatic recovery.

As a software developer I really feel ashamed. Adobe really needs a deep bugfix edition for all their applications and also needs banning those incompetent developers and testers. Years ago all Adobe software was free of such basic untested bugs...

So you are changing the input language of the keyboard? Does it work when you change lanuage manually and not with the shortcut?

I suppose you already rebooted the computer and reset the preferences (which erases all your settings). Maybe let Customer Care take a look at this: https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html

I haven't seen too many people having experience with Thai language in Illustrator in this forum.
