Illustrator CS2 updater fail

Am running AI CS2 on Win 10 box and have had no real problems for a couple years. Starts up, asks me if I want to register, I say no. Except that for the past 10 days, after the register screen disappears, a new box appears saying Can't connect with a little red X, then the program shuts down. My PS CS2 still works fine.

I tried a total uninstall and reload of AI (thinking it was a corruption problem), but the fresh install is still doing the same thing. My guess is that the Update module is to blame and that it's on the Adobe end suddenly. Any ideas / workarounds?

You have to use this installer and the serial number from there:

Download Adobe Acrobat 7 and Adobe Creative Suite 2 products

But actually CS2 is not (fully) compatible with Windows 10
