Illustrator is "forgetting" the font used in AI files

Explorer ,
Apr 23, 2019 Apr 23, 2019

I have my font manager up and running. The AI file opens with no missing font issue and looks correct in the artboard. The Character panel wont update however and every font selected is "Myriad Pro" even though they're not. I believe the font is actually missing but there is no error. I think it is a variant of DIN that none of my current fonts match. I have tried clearing the preferences and reinstalling Illustrator. I have opened the file on a different machine hoping to get the error.

Any other solutions on how to discover the name of this font?

Did you save as .ai with pdf compatible on (default) or off?

Try opening in Acrobat does it look right? Does file > properties show DIN?

Try Type Menu > Find Font.

It will list all the fonts in your document.

You could also try File > Package which will package the file and all related resources including fonts

Thank you for your help. The fact that both those methods only shows the "Myriad" font I'm assuming this data is lost forever. I will miss that font variant.

You solved it. Only in Acrobat did it have that font info. The actual font used was Bahnschrift, not a DIN one. Its nice to be able to find this info, wish I knew how the original issue happened.

Something is going on with this Bahnschrift-font. There already has been a question about it today.

You weren't kidding. I've actually had this problem for a couple months, just ignored it to the last minute. Must be a font file issue, I may just revert to using DIN in the future.

That appears to be one of the new variable fonts, what version of Illustrator &  OS are you using?

Am guessing the comes from Win 10?

Wiki DIN 1451

"In 2017, Microsoft announced that it would be including in future Windows versions "Bahnschrift", a digitisation of DIN 1451 as an OpenType variable font.[25][26] The font is bundled in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. It supports Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Currency Symbols and some Coptic."
