Hello everyone,
I'm having fun using the new 3D inflate tool to create beveled 3D versions of my graphics, export them in .obj, and use them in 3D modeling softwares.
Anyway, I'm realizing how inflation creates a weird topology in specific areas, especially when using a lower "volume" value (let's say around 20%-40%).
For example, here this should be a straight line, it comes out very zigzaggy, mostly because of the triangle topology of the 3D model.
Is there a way to smooth it out? I tried some workarounds like working at a bigger scale, rendering before exporting, removing unnecessary vector points or simplifying the path...etc but nothing changed.

Hello @Astrick,
Thank you for sharing your experience with using the 3D Inflate tool in Illustrator. I understand that you've encountered some topology issues, especially when working with lower "volume" values, resulting in zigzaggy lines in the 3D model.
To better assist you and address this concern, could you please share a sample file that demonstrates the issue? Additionally, screenshots of your 3D settings, render settings, and export settings would be very helpful. By having these details, I'll be able to provide more specific information and forward your case to the product team for further analysis.
Your input is valuable, and I appreciate your patience as we work to find a solution to this issue.
Best,
Anshul Saini

Hello, Anshul.
I am sharing a new file for confidentiality issues, which has the same weird topology issue, especially on the bevel area.
Now, these geometry aberrations are also visible directly in Illustrator. Then I just export asset to .OBJ (I don't have any setup I can do to further customize the export), and the .OBJ file that is generated keeps these weird topology issues.
When I bring it inside any 3D software, of course, the issue is still there.
I think the issue is how the software (Illustrator) generates the inflation.
I did some tests without any success.
Sometimes, if I press "Render", the graphics get a quality update and the issue seems to be resolved, but if then I export to .OBJ, the 3D model still has those issues.
I am also trying to upload the .ai file but I keep getting this message:
"The attachment's 3d_inflate_test.ai content type (application/postscript) does not match its file extension and has been removed."

I appreciate your efforts to share the file and the details of the issue you're facing, @Astrick. It seems like there might be some specific aspects of the file that are causing this topology issue. To further investigate and provide a solution, it would be helpful to have a closer look at the actual file.
I recommend uploading the file to Adobe Creative Cloud or Google Drive, or Dropbox and then sharing the public download link with me here. Once I have access to the file, I can forward it to our product team for a detailed analysis and better assistance with the issue. Thank you for your cooperation, and I look forward to examining the file.
Best,
