Images within opacity masks shift when reopening document

Community Beginner ,
May 19, 2025 May 19, 2025

I have placed images for backgrounds and inside of masks. Everything is scaled and positioned correctly. When I save my file and re-open it the next day, some of the placed image files have moved out of position significantly (image attached).

If I embed the images the problem disappears but significantly slows down my project and increases file size. This bug makes the 'place file' functionality redundant as I cannot send over files if things will only re-open incorrectly when handing the package off to artworkers or client.

Thanks in advance.

There has been an update now for Illustrator and I cannot replicate the problem anymore so probably they fixed it. I will write if I encounter this again.

Seems Illustrator is having some issues with linked images.

Try embedding all links to resolve any altered placement issues.

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately it happens regardless of whether the photo is linked or embedded 😞 Maybe something in my image/embedding settings, though - I'll take a look - thanks!

Hello everyone,

Our team is currently investigating this issue and working to fix it in a future release. In the meantime, would you mind using the option for File>Place to add your images, and then reopening the file to see if it helps?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have been having this same problem since the latest update from Adobe and I am a well seasoned Illustrator user of nearly 30 years.  It doesn't seem to matter if the images are linked or embedded and they only shift the very first time the file is reopened. The smaller the placed image, the larger the shift. If the images are placed back where they were they do not shift again.
As to the "automatially embedding images" —when you create/save the file it asks you if you want to save it with the links. This verbiage has lead many to think this is how things have always worked, but this actually means to embed the images into the document. Do not have this checked if you would rather work wiht live links. If you do this, you can still relink thought your links palette.

Same problem in version 29.5. Close file, open it and some images have gone walkies. Most up and to the left. Today down to the right. The images were drag and dropped onto the page. The artboard is set to the max size 163830 px at 72dpi.  All images are imbedded.

Same. Looking for a fix. this is very frustrating, I have over 40 images in one file and nearly half of them moved.  I found that If I kept saving, over and over, like 5+ times, the amount of images that get displaced shrinks less and less each time.  I've repeated this on 2 differnt files.  One with 40+ images, (small) and one with 15 images (small).  This might be a fluke, but I've gotten into the habit of saving many times over before closing the file.

Thank you for bringing this up - I've been having this issue for months now and it's incredibly frustrating! Even with the latest update, it still is doing this on almost every project I have that has imagery. Makes myself look very unprofessional when I hand over working files to clients/team mates and nothing is in the correct place, but it's completely out my hands - Adobe! Fix this please!

Hi Ethan23542432m42k,

We understand how frustrating it could be. The product team has worked on this issue and has provided the following update: The issue should be resolved in Beta 29.6.142 (which is oddly displayed as build 9999 in CCD). Please test in the beta version and let us know if it resolves the problem.

Please follow this UserVoice link: https://adobe.ly/3ZBCPkj for updates.

We will be happy to assist you further.

Thanks,

Harshika

So, this is the issue I have been dealing with for some time now. I have Illustrator version 29.5.1.

I make a new file, for example put some text and couple of images. I save the .ai file with the option to include linked files. Next time I open the file, the images are displaced. I don't know why and how to fix this.

I run Adobe on Macbook M1 Max on Sequoia 15.5

Hello @FilipGrz,

Are you dragging and dropping your images in Illustrator? If yes, please try using the Place command (File>Place) to link/embed your pictures and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for your answer, I will try to only place them. So far have been dragging and dropping them as it is much easier and faster.

Has anyone else encountered this:

  • Import a linked image into an illustrator document
  • Use it as a mask
  • Duplicate and transform the graphic (including mask)
  • Save the file and close
  • Reopen the file
  • Observe that the second image/mask has lost its transform properties and moved to the centre of the artboard

It's incredibly annoying when I use this workflow on nearly all the work I do, and it seems not to have been picked up as a fairly major bug.
