Import music notation into illustrator

How do you import music notation into illustrator?  I have created a pdf exported from the notation program (Finale) but when I open it in illustrator there appears to be fonts missing.  In this case, the noteheads are showing as little squares.  Any ideas? export pdf finale.JPG

Create a new file and place the PDF (linked, not embedded).

Then Object > Flatten transparency. Make sure that Outline Fonts is turned on.

You will not be able to edit text.

Hi. Finale should embed the fonts when you export to PDF but sometimes the fonts cannot be embedded due to licensing restrictions. You can try:

  1. If you're working on a mac, open the PDF in Preview applications and resave it. Sometimes, this fixes the font issue.
  2. Use a different font in Finale.
