Import of Illustrator .eps files to Word causes a problem

Dear Illustrator Community,

After upgrading Adobe Illustrator to version 22.0.1; importing .eps files to Microsoft Word Pro Plus 2013 causes Word to display the following error message: "Word is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action."

Illustrator opens the .eps file on importing/copying it to the Word file from the repository. Subsequently Illustrator can only be shut down via the task manager.

Converting the .eps file to .pdf is a workaround, but not a feasible solution.

So you are importing existing EPS files into Word?

Can you please describe step by step what is happening?

The last I read about Word and .eps, Microsoft had decided their import filter was buggy … so they simply removed support for .eps graphics! Updating the filter would be helpful, of course. Here's what I saw on a forum:

Microsoft has deprecated the Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) image filter as of the April 2017 Product Update, due to security vulnerabilities in EPS files that can be exploited via the EPS filter. The KB article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2479871 contains more information and instructions to re-enable the filter, if necessary.

Luckily for me, I don't have to use Word ;-}

Dear FieryPantone and Monica Gause,

FieryPantone, thanks for the input. We are a large organisation and we will probably choose to give priority to security and to go by the .pdf format file workaround, which despite large quantities of live .eps files see the conversion as one-off actions. Going by the .pdf format will ensure standard Word installations across the company eliminating the requirement to customize Word installations for a few Adobe Illustrator users and the security risk.
