It's not a current Illustrator capability to do it in one step. One way or another, the process of creating a new artboard to match the original and copying the artwork requires a couple of steps as @maganchi points out.

You should make a feature request here:

It's not a bad idea although I've never really needed to do it. For example, in InDesign you can use the Layout > Page > Move Page command to move page(s) to another doc

A few suggestions:

1) You could perform a "save as" of the file and rename it.

2) You could start a new file, create a new artboard and key in the same artboard dimensions that your original file contains.

Next, toggle to your original document and perform a copy of your desired art elements.

Finally, toggle over to your new file and make sure the artboard you created is selected, then go to Edit menu and select "paste in place".

It's not a bad idea although I've never really needed to do it. For example, in InDesign you can use the Layout > Page > Move Page command to move page(s) to another document. It would have to be implemented differently (like matching the x, y position of the artboard on the canvas) because Illustrator doesn't have InDesign-type pages. (In InDesign, you would specify the page to be moved to be inserted before or after another page.)
