Is there a way to turn off auto smoothing for lines?

I want to freehand draw without the autocorrect and make the corners of my shape sharp, but the system rounds them. Is this something I can fix or would photoshop be better for me? I do like the autocorrected lines sometimes but id like to know if its something i can adjust/ turn off.

I don't think so. The algorithm certainly has soem internal limit when it cuts off the smoothing tangents, but to my knowledge this is not exposed anywhere so it could be configured. Overall it should not be too much of a problem, though, given that you can always use the convert anchor point tool to make things sharp/ straight with a single click.

Freehand = pencil tool?

You can double click the tool in the tool panel and then move that slider all to the left. See if that matches your expectation.
