Keyboard shortcut problems in AI 28.1

Advocate ,

Is it just me or has something changed with keyboard shortcuts in AI 2024 (28.1)? When using the Default Set of KBSC pressing the Space Bar no longer invokes the Hand tool as it did for the past 20 years. Also on macOS, Command+Spacebar no longer invokes the Zoom tool. What's going on?

Problem solved! But don't ask me how. Restarted after running CleanMyMac X and so far everything's working normally. Many thanks to you and Ton for your help.

Check what shortcuts are hijacked by the Mac OS.

Command Spacebar shows Spotlight Search for me, but Spacebar Command gives Zoom.

I checked the OS already. That's not the problem. Why does Spacebar no longer invoke the Hand tool? Do you have this problem, Ton? I also uninstalled and then reinstalled AI but my problem still exists!

I am still on an old system (Big Sur) and spacebar gives me the hand tool. So I cannot give much help.

Lucky you! It's not easy using AI without the spacebar/hand tool shortcut. I hope someone out there can help.

I hope so too Scott.

I suppose you already tried restarting, resetting prefs (after a backup of your customized settings), checking utilities/other apps simultanuously running....

Could be some other app interfering.

These are known to interfere. Others might be doing it as well:

  • WebRoot
  • Apple Terminal
  • Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • »Enable Full Keyboard« in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard on Mac OS
  • Apple Mail, Outlook
  • Spacebar is used as a shortcut by the system
  • Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari
  • Wacom Desktop Center, Wacom settings
  • Windows Touch Pad problem
  • LastPass, Bitwarden (password managers)
  • The VPN
  • LangSwitcher app (it needs to be closed and disabled)

Thanks, Monika, but that's a long list of possible reasons! So far I've looked at all macOS Keyboard settings, but found nothing.

Yes, that's a long list. The people who figured out all those apps (for each of them it was a different one) had nothing to begin with. They stabbed in the dark.
