I have a document with over 100 layers in it ...which is pretty normal for what we do and Illustrator in CS6 has a big issue with the layer palette .....as you scroll down the palette the layer names disappear ...as you run the mouse over the layers they re-appear and then disappear again ...this issue makes the software useless as I can't see the layers .....this happens on all the documents I've been working on ....anybody getting the same thing and anybody go any ideas of how to fix this or is it Adobe's issue?

Replacing the user library directory isn't a viable solution anyway. That would just hose all of my preferences for everything else on my system. I might as well start from scratch with a new user and I've already stated that that is not a possibility. We've already established that it is something within my user account that is causing this glitch. The question is, what?

In leu of creating a new user account, you could restore from a solid backup if you have one.
Other than that option, I don't know what else to tell you other than to create a new user account and use Apple's migration Assistant to move as much as possible tot eh new user account.
Trying to find a problem deep in a user account is a fool's errand in my experience. Start over and deal with it, you'll lose less time (and sleep).

It would be easier just to live with the problem and not use template layers until the final save of my projects than to try to create a new user account. I'm not willing to nuke all of my preferences to fix it.
I just wanted to keep this thread visible since there are others who are having this problem. Maybe someone else will have better luck pinpointing the cause.

I was suggesting, though perhaps not clearly, that you replace only the Illustrator section, since that isn't working anyway (and you might be able to limit it to just CS6). As you must have figured out by now, it isn't easy to determine just which file (or files) are causing the problem. I think if anyone knew, they'd have mentioned it.

I didn't realize Crisper was not the OP inn that ca se you log inn as the root to replace the file. But is risky if make a mistake.
Also be alert to trashing the com.adobe.Illustrator.plist alongwith theh setting fholder and cleaning the personal cache and font cache files it looks to me to be a corrupt cache file.
I will post the location of those files later tonight.

Like Crisper_68 said, this only happen when you have a Template layer. I have seen this myself on all my Illustrator installation.

THE SOLUTION IS
I had this same issue happen. In OS X the problem is usually verdana font. I didn't have it installed. When the italics version isn't installed it makes all the fonts dissapear in the layers palette so long as you have one layer set to not print. That would normally display an italicized layer name but because it can't it makes all of the lables dissapear.

Thanks, I tried Verdana. Made sure the italics version was activated, but still the same problem. I think we are on the right track, but that wasn't it.

open font book and validate the font and see if there are any duplicates.

This worked, thanks! For some reason we didn't have VERDANA ITALIC loaded, but when we reloaded it, the palettes worked.

Once u do that you have to restart illustrator. If you have any font management software maybe u should disable it for the time being to make sure it's not interfering with the way verdana works because the font definitely is verdana. I had this problem before in beta and someone answerd it but adobe scrapped the beta forum but it was cached. When it happend the second time I knew what it was but forgot what the name of the font was so I decide to put it here (in case anyone needs it or I forget again.)

This worked for me, I added the Veranda TT font (Which Includes the Italic) to the Library/Fonts and re-started Illustrator, BINGO! & wadda ya know, condescending Wade wasn't even close. ;>)
Thank You All!!!

Just a heads up guys - colleague running Illustrator CC had same problem ( and not running Suitcase). The Verdana solution worked for us too. I replicated the problem on my Mac by going into FontBook, selecting collection/Computer fonts, disabling Verdana and restarting Illustrator CC... exactly same problem.
Thanks to whoever suggested this initially. Not saying it will work for everyone but a really simple possible solution, where others who shall remain nameless have overcomplicated and been quite rude in the process.
Thanks again and, don't worry, I did switch Verdana back on and it did work! LOL

Thank you for the simple Verdana Italic fix! I took the time to read Extensis Font Management Best Practices Guide (LOL) which has you remove the Verdana fonts from the Library/Fonts and put in another folder labeled Core Web Fonts. I wasn't having the layers problem before attempting to organize fonts after 25 years....I read all the above input (with dancing eyebrows on some of the conversation) put the Verdana fonts back in the Library, restarted .ai and I'm back in business.
When setting up colored shirts for silkscreening, I designate the bottom layer as the shirt color and uncheck "print" so it doesn't output to film which would be costly. Verdana Italic is used to designate that that layer doesn't print.

Same issue
CS6 Illustrator - layer names missing.
OSX 10.9.2 (Mavericks)
Old LinoType FontExplorer v1.23
Enabled the Verdana Italic font, restarted Illustrator, job done.
Thanks

Fantastic! Thank you. Recently moved over to new MacMini with OS X 10.8.2 and updated to Suitcase Fusion 4 (which tells you how to optimise font locations - in the process breaking my system!). I made Verdana (all weights/style) active permanently and layers panel now works. What was odd for me was a new document worked fine, but opening a previous document (created in CS6 wouldn't work). Switching Verdana font off the layers panel instantly stops working. Adobe support were terrible, gave up waiting on telephone queue for 35min! and online chat were no help too. Huge thank you.

Thanks to all of you who identified a duplicate or problem with fonts. Mine was a corrupt Helvetica Neue with duplicates and Myriad Pro which had to be reloaded. I can now see the palettes.
So much for the guy named Wade, who was so sure he was right. He wasn't even close.

This fixed it for me! I use Suitcase Fusion 3, and I had Verdana TrueType off. Turning on that version fixed it for me. Too bad I already trashed my prefs without success...

This is definitely a conflict with SuiteCase. Apparently the correct fonts are not activated. I activated all the Local fonts to resolve the issue. Hopefully Adobe will work with SuiteCase to release a proper fix.

Of course they will, and it will be in the next cloud-based version LOL

Just wanted to chime in on this one. I had the same problem where the Layers palette became blank in some spots (names, icons, buttons at bottom) and I lost the ability to drag and drop objects between layers. The issue would appear whenever any layer's "print" setting (in "layer options") was turned off and disappear when this setting was turned on for all layers. It was resolved by activating Verdana, presumably the italic version specifically, either with Suitcase or with Font Book. I had recently followed the instructions in the Extensis document "Font-Management-in-OSX-Best-Practices-Guide.pdf" and removed extra fonts installed on my system. Unfortunately, this one seems to be necessary for Illustrator to function. My final solution was to put it in Font Book and leave it, thus keeping Suitcase out of the equation entirely. I'm running Mac 10.6.8 with Illustrator CS6 v16.0.4 and Suitcase Fusion 2 13.2.3.

Another thanks! We upgraded to CS6 not too long ago, and Suitcase was causing some issues when it was enabled for CS6.
When I did a support call with Suitcase (running CS6 and SF4 on 10.7.5), they had me do a Quickstart Guide (meaning I cleaned out and reinstalled my fonts), and this issue came up where the layer names were disappearing.
When I moved my Verdana fonts from "Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts Disabled" to "Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts," then cleaned up in Font Book and restarted SF4 and Illustrator CS6, everything looked fine again.

Look like you have corrupted fonts.Validate fonts "Tahoma" on Win and "LucidaGrande" on Mac.
