Making Gaussian Blur transparent

Explorer ,
May 01, 2020 May 01, 2020

I have a logo that I need to put a gaussian blur around type that is sitting atop another object. How do I make the gaussian blur transparent (without a white background) so that the graphic behind it shows through. I am using Illustrator 2020 on a Mac High Sierra Ver 10.13.6. Please see attached screen shots. Really need help on this one quick. NOTE: I need my file to be vector art as I need to enlarge it a lot.

So you want to blur the background?

You would need to make a copy of the background artwork, mask it and blur it.

But: Gaussian blur will only be scalable inside Illustrator. The output file won't be scalable.

Select your your object

Click on 'Opacity' on the menu bar

Select Multiply from the drop down menu with Normal on top.

(you may also need to place a copy of your unblurred logo over the top with Transparency set to Normal to preserve the white in the logo itself)

I hope this helps!

I've moved this from the poorly named Community Help forum (which is the forum for issues using the forums) to the Illustrator forum.

Gaussian blur is a raster effect. It won't be vector however you do it.

Otherwise: what are you applying the effect to? Can we see the layers panel, and the appearance panel for whatever object it is?

Drop shadow is a raster based effect as well. It will be scalable only inside Illustrator. Once it's exported, it's not scalable anymore.

On most printers white doesn't print (there are some on which it does - usually in direct to garment t-shirt printing).

So you should talk to the people who will actually print it and ask about file specifications.
