Marks & Bleed - PDF/X-4 Courier could not be embedded

Hi All,

When I save my document as a pdf using an the X-4 standard I get the following error:

The document was saved without PDF/X compliancy because a required font could not be embedded.

The font Courier could not be embedded in the PDF document because of licensing restrictions. Stroked text will not be visible. The PDF document is not PDF/X compliant.

If I don't add the Marks and Bleeds it does not have this error. If I enter information into my marks and bleed it comes out garbled:

áÑí=pìêêçìåÇ=îMQ=^mmolsba=ql=mofkqK=îMOéÇÑKéÇÑ===O===OSLMQLOMNU===NNWRSWPR

Anyone know why this is happening? Have a solution?

I'm on windows so I believe courier is a standard font?

Thanks

Try reinstalling that font.

Interestingly this error is only happening in 2017 and not 2018

Try resetting the preferences of the version of Adobe:

  1. Exit the application
  2. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (macOS) as you start Adobe Software. The new preferences files are created when you start the application.

"The font Courier could not be embedded in the PDF document because of licensing restrictions." means that the creator of the font disallowed font embedding. The workaround is turning the font into an outline. But since it only has the issue in CC17, I think your preferences are corrupt.

I've just had this error come up when trying to export PDF/X-4 in CC2019. Saving as PDF/X-3 doesn't give me this issue. Guess I'll stick with that.

How about unchecking some options in the marks&bleed section of the PDF options?

Hi Monika

I've just been running some tests and switched Marks & Bleed settings both on and off in various configurations and still get the same error coming up. I'm very reluctant to reset my prefs because it'll reset all my brushes and panels, won't it?

Regards

Eddie

Should just be the "page info" option and maybe the "color control strip" that wants to embed fonts.

Actually the printer shouldn't need those at all. They just need the bleed. Everything else is in the PDF and they have their own software to create the marks they need in the exact place they need them.

It shows up whether I have the page options ticked on or off. The pdf still saves in each instance.

You could try and repair that Courier font. Or get a more updated version.

Try this soulution:
1- Quit Illustrator
2- Open Adobe Creative Cloud app and Search for Courier
3- Scroll down to Adobe fonts, Remove font, then install again
4- Now, Open Adobe fonts on the right, find Courier and Install Family

Works for me.
