Images disappear after dragging and dropping to Illustrator

Explorer ,
Apr 02, 2025 Apr 02, 2025

I had trouble dragging and dropping from Photoshop 25 to Illustrator 25, but the last upgrade fixed this.  Now after I drag and drop the image disappears a few minutes later and isn't there after saving.

Hello everyone,

I have escalated this problem with the product team, and they are investigating it. Kindly upvote this UserVoice and add your comments (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/49703918-images-disappearing-after-drag-and-drop-on-mac) to track updates.

For now, try saving your image locally and then using File>Place, as Ton suggested. Then, share your observations.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or need assistance. We'd b

Hi everyone,

The product team has worked on this issue and has provided the following update: The issue should be resolved in Beta 29.6.142 (which is oddly displayed as build 9999 in CCD). Please test in the beta version and let us know if it resolves the problem.

Thank you for your patience!

Hey folks, today i've updated my illustrator to newset version (29.6.1) and noticed that the project I was working yesterday losed some of my attached images.
They where print screens that I would use as reference.
Now they look just like the image below:

I cant only see some lines where the images should be.
in the layers, they look empty, as you can see below.

Does this happened to anyone?

Hi @Gabriel5E9E,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing these screenshots. I can imagine how worrying it must be to see your reference images suddenly missing after an update.

When you paste screenshots or images directly into Illustrator, they are embedded in the file. Sometimes, after an update, certain embedded images can appear as missing or just show as outlines if there is a display glitch or corruption in the file.

Could you please let me know your macOS version and confirm whether this issue is happening in all files or just this specific one? Also, if possible, try creating a new test file and paste a few new screenshots to see if they display correctly.

In addition, please try disabling GPU Performance in Illustrator Preferences > Performance and check if the images reappear. You can also try enabling Overprint Preview from the View menu as this sometimes forces a more accurate rendering of objects that may not be displaying properly.

Looking forward to your update!

Abhishek

I'm running mac os sequoia 15.5

The files are named as .tif (as screenshot shows) and they were print screens from websites (such as behance and other stuff) that i've done and paste into my illustrator file. I've always did that and never happened something like this.
If i paste a new print screen, it shows up perfectly.

Did you drag and drop the images or use File > Place?

Drag and drop seems to be unreliable lately.

Can you show the Links panel with the missing image selected and details shown (like link location)?

Print and then drag and drop inside AI file.

here's a print with the links panel. The missing images doesn't have any thumbnail, and if you notice, I also have another 2 print screens that still there in the AI file. Only disappeared some of them.

And if you select one of the missing, you get probably something like this:

That is exactly the bug described at the Uservoice report below. And you cannot open them from that location.

The only current workaround is to use Place instead of drag and drop.

And the images bug is random? Because there are still 3 images that i've printed and dragged into AI that are OK (including the one i've did the same to print here, it still there without bug)

There could be some random bugs, I sometimes see a screencapture that does not disappear, no idea why. This makes it probably so difficult to solve quickly for the Illustrator team.

Place is currently the safe way.

Resetting Preferences solves the problem. If not, leave a comment on Uservoice:
