Mojikumi (文字組み) settings not working in Illustrator 2025 on Windows

Community Beginner ,

I’m using Adobe Illustrator 2025 (Windows), and the Mojikumi (文字組み) settings for Chinese text are not taking effect. The same file works correctly on macOS, where Mojikumi adjustments (including punctuation compression and line-break rules) apply as expected.
I have enabled East Asian Options in Preferences and checked the paragraph Mojikumi settings, but the Windows version still doesn’t apply them.

The same file works properly in Illustrator 2020, where Mojikumi behaves as intended.
I also found several reports from other users in Chinese design communities mentioning the same issue around June 2025, so it might be a Windows-specific regression.

Is this a known issue, or is there any reliable workaround?

Hello @Exusial27177152yj6a,

Thanks for reaching out. Could you try updating to the latest version of Illustrator (v30) and check if it continues to behave the same? Additionally, please confirm the version of Illustrator 2020 where the behaviour is different, so we can investigate with the team.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I updated Illustrator on macOS from one of the 29.x versions to 30.0, and now my Mojikumi sets no longer work either!
After that, I downloaded version 29.8.3, and when opening the same file, Illustrator showed a message saying that text styles needed to be updated (reflow viewer) , the Mojikumi settings still didn’t work.

This makes me suspect that the issue was introduced in one of the Illustrator 29 updates, and it is not limited to Windows.Rum27_0-1763362623698.png

I kept downgrading the application, and the issue persists all the way down to version 29.2. I haven’t tested 29.1 yet, but the feature works normally in 29.0.
I also saw reports from other users on Chinese social media who encountered the same problem, and their workaround was to downgrade Illustrator to the 2024 version.
It seems that this issue has been present across multiple versions, but it still hasn’t been fixed.

I’ve encountered the same issue where the behaviour of Mojikumi is different starting from Illustrator 2025.
It now only works if the Hanzi and Latin share the same font (or composite font).

Mixing different Latin and Hanzi fonts is standard practice in typesetting. And since composite font support in Illustrator is not great for non-Japanese Hanzi scripts (Traditional & Simplified Chinese, TC/SC), now that the Mojikumi feature is malfunctional, professional typesetting in TC/SC languages is impratical.

I hope this issue could be resolved! Illustrator was once a nice typesetting tool.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for sharing your insights and observations. I have shared this info with the product team for further investigation. Could you also share a few sample files along with screenshots of the problem in comparison with how Illustrator behaved in earlier versions after uploading them to a file-sharing service, so we can investigate further?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I created this file in Illustrator 29.0.
Within the affected text, I applied three different Mojikumi sets:
a custom Mojikumi set with manually adjusted values,
the default Mojikumi set provided by the application (half-width punctuation at line ends),
and no Mojikumi set.

I then converted the text to outlines for comparison. You can see in this file how the text looks when Mojikumi is working correctly. However, when the file is opened in any version later than 29.0, all of these texts are displayed as if no Mojikumi set were applied. Because I am unable to upload compressed files, I can only open and upload the files. I'm not sure if this is possible, but I hope you can fix this issue as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please reply to me
