My stroke and Fill are not working

I wanted to learn more about Illustrator and was taking a free course when it ask to use the stroke and fill but I notice nothing was showing...It wanted me to make the stroke more than 1pt but when I move it up but its not doing anything and the fill no matter what colour I'm choosing it won't show. Can anyone help me with this situation?

It's not really clear where and how your obstacles arise. Perhaps you could explain in a bit more detail, maybe with a screenshot or two.

A screenshot would help, as we can confirm that you have the time selected and so much more. You may also be in outline view. Please post  screenshot of your entire screen, including the stroke palette in focus.

I guess Mike is right, you are probably in Outline Preview. Cmd or Ctrl Y will switch to Preview (see View menu).
