Hello ,I am a newer user of illustrator and I had a vexing issue while using illustrator today. I was completing a tutorial and learning the basics but while trying to select part of an image and seeing how the fill and stroke colour squares changed I saw them turn to the GUI's dark grey colour and have question marks all over them. Please help! I am totally stumped on this !

You have question marks as when you select you are selecting the group and therefore have different fills and stroke colours. If you ungroup or select using the direct selection tool you will get specific colours shown in your strokes and fills pallet.
