Numerous issues when saving AI to SVG

Hi everyone!

If anyone has any insight or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

My current "fix" was dowloading and using an older version of Adobe Illustrator, but a small error still arose with that.

There was a change of the SVG code with no option to choose the former SVG code (which we need for our eProduct). Also other issues appeared when saving AI to SVG. See below:

    1. Clipping paths are handled differently (see screenshot "Example-Code)
    2. File format of the linked background images changed from JPG to PNG
    3. File size from the linked background images increased significantly (won’t load when opening the SVG)

4. Background image shifted, so things aren't properly lined up anymore (see screenshot "Example-ImageShift")

Hi @YvetteK,

Thank you for sharing the details of the issues you’re facing. To better understand and assist you with the problems when saving AI files to SVG, could you please provide the following?

1. The original AI file you’re working with.

2. A screenshot of the export settings you used when saving as SVG.

3. The exported SVG file.
4. The version of Adobe Illustrator you are currently using.

With this information, I’ll be able to investigate the issue further and provide tailored recommendations or solutions. Looking forward to helping you resolve this!

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

Hi Anshul,

Thank you so much for getting back to me.

Since my job doesn't allow us to share things via public apps, they created a link where you can download the items.

There are 2 folders. One with the ai file and svg created at the time was the newer version of Illustrator (July 2024) that created issues when saving as an svg. The 2nd folder is with the ai and svg files saved in an older version of Illustrator (27.9.4). I attached a screenshot of the SVG export settings.

Thank you so much for the information Anshul!! I just forwarded your information to my colleagues as well. Looking forward to your findings for #1 and 2 and will let you know if I need further assistance.

Have a great day ahead!

Thank you for your patience, @YvetteK while I followed up with the product team. I understand this has been a time-consuming process, and I appreciate your continued cooperation.

Here’s what I’ve learned from the product team:

1. We do handle clip Path differently. That is as designed.

Instead of:
<defs> <rect id="SVGID_1_" width="474.3" height="589.6"/> </defs> <clipPath id="SVGID_00000068645000764953185200000016609319239509951140_"> <use xlink:href="#SVGID_1_" overflow="visible"/> </clipPath> <g clip-path="url(#SVGID_00000068645000764953185200000016609319239509951140_)"> ... </g>

we use
<defs> <clipPath id="clippath"> <rect class="st0" x="59.19" y="131.05" width="474.27" height="589.61"/> </clipPath> </defs> <g clip-path="clippath"> ... </g>

2. Functionally, there is no difference. However, the newer version is supposed to be more compliant with the SVG spec and more compatible with embedded SVG viewers.

That said, since this is affecting your workflow, the product team would like to understand if there’s a specific compatibility issue with another application you’re using. While the general structure won’t be reverted, knowing more about the impact might help us explore potential solutions.

Please let me know, and I’ll be happy to assist further!

Best,

Anshul Saini
