I am also having this problem. Only difference is I am exporting from CorelDraw X6.
I did a few tests tho to rule some things out.
I exported as an EPS file and when I open that in Illustrator I do not get that error message.
(When I save this same EPS file as an AI file, I do NOT get the error when I open THAT AI file.)
I opened a few AI files that I exported from Corel a few days ago and did not get that error message.
Opened a completely different CDR file, exported as AI, opened in Illustrator and got the same error message.
Copied existing content into a NEW Blank CDR file, exported as AI, opened in Illustrator and got the same error message.
It appears to be only throwing that error message out for any AI file that I've made in the past 2 days (Nov. 22 & 23). Everything previous to that opens without error.
I should also note that while I do get this error with each file I open, the file DOES open, and has to immediately visible issues.

I've got the same thing happening. I JUST upgraded to Illustrator 2017 tonight and now I can't open half of my files. I'm in the mood to throw something at Adobe right now.

So all of the files discussed in this thread come from Corel Draw?
Can you all please upload example files somewhere and post the links here?
Otherwise it might get somewhat difficult to solve the issue.
Also: does that only happen with AI files exported from CorelDraw 7? Or also from other versions? Or also with other file types?

Larry, i've upgraded the Illustrator yesterday and the problem was solved. I guess the best answer for the question would be this. But i will delete my previous comment and we will be all a happy community!
(unhappily i just can't find the option to delete it! It just doesn't appear in the menu action
)
