Paste content from 3 layers into 3 new layers?

Let's say I have  3 objects on 3 layers. How do I copy and paste these objects, including their layer positions, into 3 new layers - in the same Illustrator project?

My current 'workaround' is to save each version in separate projects, but that's obviously not useful since I can't see all versions at once...

Hi. I'm not sure I'm understanding you correctly, but to me it reads that you'd like objects on separate layers to be duplicated to new layers containing those objects and then change their stacking order? If so, I'm with you in missing send back/front option.

If that's the case, I'd suggest using the layers, themselves. First, select the 3 layers and drag them to the New Layer icon, then manually distribute them by layer-dragging.

...I should add that I've tried another 'workaround' too:

1) Copying all 3 objects into one new layer (a)

2) Creating 2 new layers (b) and (c)

3) Moving objects to layers (b) and (c), so that all objects have their own layers

But that doesn't work either because it's no longer possible to send objects to the back or front (thus defying the very purpose of layers)...

Wow, S_Gans, this is the most helpful post ever! Thank you very much for actually making and uploading a video!

And yes, this is exactly what I was hoping for - I would never have figured that out by myself!

...and another workaround:

1. Create 3 new layers

2. Copy the first object and past in front (CMD+F on Mac or CTRL+F on Win)

3. Move the colored square (on the layer panel) from actual layer to new layer

4. Repeat steps 2. and 3. for the other objects.

Thank you, Cinziamarotta! After completing these steps, is it then possible to send objects to the back and the front? (I'm asking because I'm not at my work-computer right now, so I can't check.)
