Using Pathfinder, how do I create a simple mouth like in the screenshot with two separate shapes?

Thanks.Screen Shot 2018-09-25 at 8.09.50 PM.png

You could do it in two shapes but really it needs three.

Draw two ellipses and a rectangle and arrange as shown here:

Use the Pathfinder Divide function

Ungroup and delete the bits you don't want:

Drawing with two shapes: if you really wanted to do it with just two shapes, you could draw a rectangle that is twice as wide as it is high, then select the two bottom points and withe the Direct Selection Tool active, change their corner radius to the maximum, then just create an ellipse that overlaps and continue with the pathfinder. Three shapes is probably faster.

Hope that helps.
