PDF Print Export: MediaBox problem

Explorer ,
Dec 23, 2024 Dec 23, 2024

Hello,

I am preparing a project in Illustrator/InDesign. It’s not for a bound book but for loose sheets. After cutting, the final size needs to be 200x110 mm, so I set the artboard size in Illustrator to 200x110 mm and added a 5 mm bleed. I've completed my design, but when I export it as a PDF, the MediaBox and CropBox dimensions show as 223 mm.

This means that for my design, which should fit on A5 paper, the person doing the digital printing will need to use A4 paper. However, I want them to use A5 paper, but the MediaBox ends up being 223 mm each time. What would you recommend as a solution?

Thank you!

You do not necessarily have to include print marks. The RIP can take that info from the boxes.

Media size is the paper size and that has to include the size needed for the printer's marks.

The MediaBox is showing as 223 mm. In this case, the person printing will need to load A4 paper into the printer’s paper tray. However, I want to adjust it so that they can select A5 paper for my design, which is smaller than A5.

Did you check the Page Boxes in Acrobat > Print Production?

Hello,

Thank you for your response. The artboard is 200x110 mm, and the bleed is 5 mm on all sides. The TrimBox and BleedBox areas in the PDF are exactly as I want them. However, as can be seen in the image, the MediaBox and CropBox are 219x129 mm. 219 mm is larger than A5, as A5 is 210 mm. After cutting, the remaining paper should be 200x110 mm, and it seems this will match the TrimBox. But since the person doing the digital printing will choose the paper based on the MediaBox, they will consider A5 to be too small and select a larger paper. I want them to choose A5 paper because otherwise, there will be paper waste and increased costs.

Thank you!

Maybe it is an option to save without printer marks. They make the size larger

What confuses me is that the mediabox is larger than A5. My work is suitable for A5. I want them to select A5 as the paper size. I guess I'll just tell the person handling the printing to use A5 now :))

Without printer marks, it stays within the limits of an A5.

But it is always a good idea to talk to the printer.

I understand. Thank you. I will talk to the person who will do the printing tomorrow. If they say it’s fine without the crop marks, I will directly export the PDF as print and send it that way. Thank you very much for your response.
