Since the latest update, the pen tool no longer snaps to the path of an object. Used to work all the time, no problem. Once in a while, it randomly will work, but 95% of the time it does not work. It will still snap to an anchor point but it is incredibly tedious to add in an anchor point every time I want to put a new object's anchor against another's path.
I have looked all over for an answer - I have tried turning smart guides on/off and all other snaps on/off. NOTHING is working. This has been an incredible thorn in my side and is really hindering workflow (and along with the new zoom to selection, it is just making work unbelievably frustrating and taking much longer than necessary).
Any ideas here would be appreciated.

If smart guides do not help (most of the time they don't help when working with the pen tool), post it as a bug:

Works fine for me with Smart Guides on.
The moment that the Pen reaches a path it says "Path" and snaps.
Maybe resetting Preferences will help:

I tried to reset the preferences as the guide explained, but alas, it did not work. I think I will have to report it as a bug since I just cannot figure it out.

Experiencing exactly the same and tried everything to fix it: Turning Smart Guides ON/OFF, resetting prefs, trying all the other snap options, nothings working, how am I supposed to work like this? This update is a pure disaster Adobe, paired with the extreme lags after 10 minutes of working (my PC is fresh and a crazy beast) Illustrator is completly unusable right now..

found out that when I use a pathfinder (any) , the pen tool can now detects the path.
it's like the object is in a non-expanded appearance even though the object is an outlined text.
using Expand Appearance doesn't work in this case.
