Phantom images, extended pasteboard. Gallery thumbnail different from open file.

I received files from a client. There is a discrepancy between the document that opens and the thumbnail showing in the gallery. Can anyone explain this? When I open I get this small pasteboard with one logo. But the gallery thumbnail shows lots of other content. Where is it? Does it exist? It doesn't appear as separate layers, nor does it appear when I reveal hidden elements.

Does Placing the EPS work?

Or ask the client for a .ai file.

Thanks....I think I will just copy the content I want into a new file and be done with it....

The gallery image is an embedded pixel image. It may or may not represent the actual content of the file.
