Placed images rotate 90 degrees when opened.

When I open a file created in a previous version of AI, the images are rotated 90 degrees. 

The images placed were not originally rotated when designed. 

Only started with the newest update. 28.1

What kind of images were they?

They were provided by the customer.

Are the images linked or have they been embedded?

If the images are linked and they were independently altered in some way, those changes would then show in the Illustrator file.

They were linked, but the linked images were not manipulated after production. Had the smae issue with a customers file last week. Thought it was their file but now I think it's my Illustrator for some reason. 

I had just upgraded to a Mac Studio M2 Ultra when this started. 
The link preview shows the image at 90 but the image linked is not and never has been.

Could the images have been rotated by somebody outside of Illustrator (even if just previewing them)?

Negative. Files are saved on my server with limited access.

1. It has happened to 2 files i've noticed. 1 file being mine and another file from a customer.

2. I can share the files but they are larger than 47mb
3. Yes, moved to desktop and relinked inmages does not change. 

I have not seen it before update to 28.1. I do not have an older version. I could download a previous version and test.
