Problems with Illustrator (again)

Community Beginner ,

Hi guys

This is another SOS to help me with Illustrator! I've been following a 'simple' surface pattern tutorial for months now, I'm halfway through with it but finding it really hard to get the hang of what they are trying to teach me!

I'm basically trying to make a repeat surface pattern for fabric. I just can't seem to get the hang of it, I'll attach the screenshots to show you what I mean in where I am up to so far.

In the screenshots you can see I am trying to preview the pattern I have created using the Rectangular Box tool however it overtakes the screen when I've transferred the pattern from my Swatches palette. Am I doing this correct? The girl on my tutorial makes it look so simple and hers is nicely pasted into the rectangular box only, mine honestly looks nothing like hers.

If you could help me I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks

Lauren

What tutorial are you following and where do you get stuck?

Your screenshots are tiny. Are you perhaps applying the pattern to the stroke?

This looks like you are using the pattern editing mode and the tutorial is working like in the old times.

Maybe you should watch a different tutorial. And it's still not clear what you are actually trying to achieve.

Please explain your exact process when you've "transferred the pattern from my Swatches palette". I think what you are trying to do is to apply the pattern to the rectangle, but instead you are opening the pattern for edit in the Pattern Options panel.

If you already have the pattern in the Swatches panel, just select the rectangle and click once on the pattern swatch.

Apologies if I've misunderstood.

Peter
