I have a pdf graph created (by someone else) with R. Graph symbols display fine in Acrobat . When I "open" in Illustrator they do not. When I "place" in Illustrator it displays correctly UNTIL I click embed, then it tells me that "The font AdobePiStd is missing. Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font." Same thing happens when I "open" but click the linked file option - displays properly until I embed.
AdobePiStd is a font choice for me for text (although it displays with a small black diamond after AdobePiStd in the font list).
If I edit the graph in Acrobat it says the font for the symbols is Zapf Dingbats
Zapf Dingbats is a font choice in Illustrator
I have used PreFlight in Adobe Acrobat - it tells me there are no font embedding problems to fix. Solutions that include things like "ggplot2" are not useable by me. I looked in TypeKit and I don't see AdobePiStd there.
I'm using Illustrator CC 22.1 with MacOS 10.13
I found this list and it seems AdobePiStd is included with the installation but is not for the design use of the software license owner.
Although the font restriction is in installable mode ( I checked the font that comes with CC 2018) you may not be allowed to use it in your own documents, unless you acquire another version from Typekit.

AdobePiStd is bundled only in Adobe CS and CS2. It was not included from CS3 onwards.
When a font is embedded in a PDF file, it means you can place it in any computer and any layout that supports PDF format without having to install the font in your system or in your Software's fonts folder.
However when you are editing a PDF file, you are required to install the font.
Illustrator cannot and is legally not allowed to extract the embedded font for editing purposes.
Notice that as a link, Illustrator will allow you to view the font correctly, but if you start embedding and editing it will not.
Moreover, an embedded font is most likely scrambled (custom-encoded) and contains only limited characters
Even if you have the technical capability to extract it, it will not be useful.
You will have to acquire the font (legally) and install it in the system or Adobe's font folder, or Illustrator's font folder to view it properly.

I did a search for AdobePiStd and it seems that InDesign CC2018 still has that font.

Interesting.
I cannot find the font in TypeKit and cannot see anywhere else (https://www.fontspring.com/foundry/adobe )
where you can legally get that font.

Interesting indeed.
Maybe the Adobe CC legal team can address this.
Adobe could have acquired the designs of Zapf Dingbats (Hermann Zapf) for that purpose only.
The commercial version that matches the glyphs and unicode (as many claim) is Zapf Dingbats Std available from:
(Disclaimer: I don't have a sales commission, just in case you buy the font from them. )

Unfortunately AdobePiStd and Zapf Dingbats do not match.
Above: AdobePiStd missing font substituted by Zapf Dingbats, below: AdobePiStd outlined.
If you are on a Mac OS, there is no need to buy Zapf Dingbats, it is part of the System Fonts.
